Liverpool were bidding to win the cup for the fifth time and keep the trophy at Anfield, but it didn't all accoprding to plan. Milan dominated and had a huge half-time lead of 3-0 thanks a goal from skipper Paolo Maldini in the first minute and a brace from Hernan Crespo. Liverpool looked dead and buried, but Rafa Benitez changed things around bringing on Dietmar Hamann for Steve Finnan. It proved an inspired substitution and a frantic start to the half with a headed goal from Steven Gerrard giving the reds hope just a minute later it was 3-2 with a 20 yard strike from Vladimir Smicer in his farewell appearance for Liverpool. Alonso made it 3-3 after 60 minutes following the penalty he saw saved by Dida.
Extra-time loomed and so it proved as it remained 3-3 after 90 minutes. AC Milan again were on top and had a couple of chances, but the defence held thanks to a stunnning double save from Dudek close to the end of extra-time.

It came down to penalties Milan won the toss, Serginho, Pirlo and Shevchenko missed as Liverpool held their nerve and held on despite Riise's miss after successful penalties by German Dietmar Hamann, Czech Vladimir Smicer and French striker Djibril Cisse.
